What were the instructor's strengths? Weaknesses?

  • Ethan presented clear lectures and facilitated meaningful discussion. He made sure that the concepts presented in our often very dense and difficult readings were understood and always related readings back to our central theme. He presented the entire class very clearly; you could tell he had thought out how he wanted to present the issues and did so very skillfully and deliberately.
  • Ethan is a good teacher and did a good job of presenting clear and contrasting viewpoints on the topic of class politics in america. I was more than satisfied with my experience in the class.
  • Great at leading and focusing class discussion--he never lectured but I still felt like I was learning a lot. Also, his feedback on the midterm and suggestions for my final project were really helpful.
  • Very good at facilitating discussion that is interesting and balanced. Picked an easy to engage set of readings

What were the teaching assistant's or writing intern's strengths? Weaknesses?

  • n/a

What, if anything, what would you change about this course and why?

  • Perhaps fewer, shorter, or easier readings, but in retrospect I felt like I learned much from them. and am glad I did them. Ethan did a good job of making sure that the readings were never redundant or boring.
  • Nothing. I really enjoyed this course.

Is there any topic in this course that you wished you had had previous background in?

  • no
  • No
  • some more about partisanship might be useful

Which texts were most useful?

  • Bartels, Lichtenstein, pretty much all of them depending on what your final paper topic was
  • More Tocqueville and Lipset.
  • Downs, and bartels

Which least?

  • n/a

How productive was class discussion?

  • Quite productive; sometimes got out of hand because things got contentious, but Ethan always brought it back without calling anyone out. Unlike many teachers, Ethan was able to tell when discussion was floundering and knew when to just tell us what the answers were.
  • Fairly productive, though occasionally the class was a little quiet/had to be prodded
  • very, it was the best discussion class i've had here

How has this course contributed to your education?

  • Gave me new ways to think about class, which I think is generally useful. Also, I thought it was a good introduction to political science (in terms of methods, kinds of texts, what makes something political science rather than sociology/philosophy/etc.)
